About Periodontal Disease |
|
Periodontal diseases are bacterial infections in the gums and bones which surround the teeth. Periodontal disease, including gingivitis and periodontitis, is the most common disease in the oral cavity and is the primary cause of tooth loss in adults. Gingivitis is gum inflammation and is usually an infection caused by the bacteria found in plaque and tartar. It is extremely common and affects millions of Americans. Gingivitis commonly presents as red, swollen gums which bleed easily, and may be sensitive or painful.
If left untreated, gingivitis may progress to periodontitis, a deep inflammation in the bones supporting the teeth. As the immune system mounts an attack on these deep bacteria, bone is destroyed in the process. This leads to loosening of the teeth and ultimately, tooth loss. Also, the deep infection may have other negative health implications throughout your body. (see "Mouth-Body Connection")
Although periodontal disease is a chronic infection and can be very debilitating if left unchecked, the good news is that it is treatable, and effective periodontal therapy can reverse the disease process. Even if you have lost tooth support, periodontal treatment can help you save your teeth and restore your healthy smile.
