A periodontist is a dentist who specializes in the treatment of gum disease. Periodontics is that specialty of dentistry which encompasses the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of diseases of the supporting and surrounding tissues of the teeth or their substitutes. It also includes the maintenance of the health, function, and esthetics of these structures and tissues. In other words, periodontics deals with the treatment of gum disease and infections of the bone which surround teeth and dental implants.
